Reading a book, breastfeeding a baby and drinking a beer – often with a cell phone in hand or not wearing a seatbelt.
These are just some of the latest violations captured by Western Australia’s new AI traffic safety cameras.
During a budget hearing on Wednesday morning, Police and Road Safety Minister Reece Whitby said that since February 2025, when the cameras were first installed, seatbelt offenses had fallen by 86 per cent, mobile phone offenses by 88 per cent and speeding by 51 per cent.
Since October, fines have been issued for suspected traffic violations caught on the cameras.
“We have seen massive behavioral changes, but we still see extraordinary things happening behind the wheel,” he said.
