Murphy Campbell, a singer-songwriter from North Carolina, didn’t even know she had released new music until her fans told her. The messages flooding her inbox prompted Campbell to check her pages on major streaming services, where she was surprised to find two new songs. She clicked play.
“It was this computer that mimicked my voice,” says Campbell, who specializes in traditional folk music Rolling Stone“And I try to play the banjo and dulcimer really badly.”
“I laughed for a long time,” she continues. “And then I had a hard time being with myself for a few days because I was so frustrated. It feels so out of hand: ‘Who did this?’ Ultimately, there was a human somewhere who had to make the AI do this.”
