Filmmaker Stephen Soderbergh defended and explained his decision to use generative artificial intelligence in his upcoming documentary about John Lennon’s final interview.
Announced last year John Lennon: The Last Interview contains audio of an interview Lennon and Yoko Ono gave to RKO Radio on December 8, 1980, just hours before Lennon was murdered. Soderbergh combined much of the audio recordings with archival material that he provided with support from Lennon’s estate. But at the moments when Lennon and Ono began to become philosophical and abstract, Soderbergh decided that a different kind of visual accompaniment was needed.
While it was previously revealed that Soderbergh had decided to use AI for these sections in a new interview with deadline, He explained in detail his use of AI and the reasons behind it. He also revealed that the AI parts of the film were created in collaboration with Meta, which provided both technical tools and financial resources…
