Each November, we take time to celebrate Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor the history and culture of the Native American community. For 30 days we should reflect on the resilience of the first people to set foot on this land, but the reality is that much of that recognition is fleeting. If we want to truly honor Native Americans, we must look beyond the month and think about how we can support these communities year-round.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, over 9.7 million Native Americans live in the United States. Of these, around 22% live on reservations. Living conditions on these reservations are often terrible; high unemployment rates, poverty, inadequate housing and a lack of utilities. Then why do people still live there?
