Pentagon announces contract with seven AI companies for classified systems

The latest instance of departmental integration with AI comes amid an anthropic standoff and concerns over deployment to the Iran War.

Washington, D.C. – The US Department of Defense has announced a new agreement with seven artificial intelligence companies to use their advanced technologies for its secret networks.

Friday’s announcement is the latest example of closer integration between the Pentagon, which has been expanding its use of AI for about a decade, and major technology companies.

This comes amid a broader investigation into corporate involvement in the US military, which has gained renewed attention amid public spats with AI company Anthropic and questions about how AI was used in the US-Israeli war against Iran.

In a statement, the Defense Department said the new agreements with SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, NVIDIA, Reflection, Microsoft and Amazon Web Services “accelerate the transformation to the founding of the United States…”
