Telecom providers are expanding their networks beyond connectivity to support AI workloads closer to end users. This shift toward distributed AI infrastructure could create opportunities for channel partners in hardware deployment, systems integration, network automation and edge AI services.
At GTC Berlin on Oct. 21, Nvidia announced that telecom operators including T-Mobile and Orange, working with technology suppliers such as Nokia, were adding accelerated computing to their infrastructure. The projects span AI-RAN, network automation and AI services delivered closer to users.
“Telecom networks were built to carry the world’s conversations. Now, they will also carry the world’s intelligence,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA.
How global telecoms are using Nvidia tech
AI-RAN brings accelerated computing and AI capabilities into the radio access network, which connects mobile devices to an operator’s network. Nokia says its collaboration with T-Mobile and Nvidia has moved the technology from laboratory testing to a live commercial cell site.
In an Oct. 21 announcement, Nokia said it had completed what it described as the world’s first AI-RAN call at a commercial cell site in Bellevue, Washington, working with T-Mobile and Nvidia. The field trial used Nokia Massive MIMO radio, Nokia 5G anyRAN software, and server infrastructure built on the NVIDIA Aerial RAN Computer (ARC) platform to make the call on T-Mobile’s commercial…
