Meta announces that it is acquiring Chinese-founded AI company Manus to boost the capabilities of its technology.

Bloomberg analysts and the Wall Street Journal suggested the purchase could be worth more than $2 billion (£1.48 billion).

Meta said the deal would help improve its own AI by giving people access to “agents” – tools that can do complex things with minimal user interaction, such as planning trips or creating presentations.

“Manus’ exceptional talent will join the Meta team to provide general-purpose agents for our consumer and business products, including Meta AI,” it said in a blog post.

Barton Crockett, an analyst at Rosenblatt Securities, told Reuters it was a “natural fit” to Meta, which also reflected boss Mark Zuckerberg’s “vision of personal AI” using agents.

After moving from China, Manus is based in Singapore and is trying to differentiate itself from rival AI developers with what it claims is a “truly autonomous” agent.
