The Metropolitan Police have held talks with Palantir that could lead to London police purchasing the US spy tech company’s AI technology to automate intelligence analysis for criminal investigations, the Guardian has learned.
Palantir, whose software is used by Donald Trump’s ICE immigration program and the Israeli military, demonstrated its systems last month to senior officials in the intelligence division of Britain’s largest police force. Intelligence officials were tasked with finding intelligence systems that AI could automate to increase productivity.
The talks have raised internal concerns about allowing a controversial US company to process highly sensitive intelligence data related to crimes, such as victims’ personal data.
Palantir is already supplying Scotland Yard with experimental AI aimed at tracking down rogue officers, and there are internal expectations that the company is likely to be asked to expand its role to a potentially significant extent…
