International Business Machines (IBM) is back in the headlines after unveiling new beta features for its Digital Asset Haven platform, allowing clients to connect to Swift’s blockchain-based shared ledger and support tokenized deposits.

For context, International Business Machines shares have come under pressure this year, with the year to date share price return down 22.11% at a recent price of US$227.06, even though the 3 year total shareholder return of 75.91% and 5 year total shareholder return of 107.18% point to much stronger longer run compounding. Recent setbacks, including the sharp selloff after management previewed weak Q2 results and concerns around Z mainframe performance, mean the 90 day share price return is down 16.41% and the 1 year total shareholder return is down 17.22%. This suggests sentiment has cooled even as IBM continues to roll out new AI, quantum and digital asset partnerships that some investors may view as longer term drivers for the business.
