Charities occupy a unique position of trust, but many quietly use commercial profiling tools that use data to classify and predict the behavior of their supporters: who they are, how likely they are to donate, and how much they are worth to a charity.

Approximately 13 million Australians donate to charities each year, and the number who engage with charities through mailing lists or other contact points is even greater. Of the 31 charities I examined, 19 used commercial profiling tools.
