If you’re currently applying for junior positions, you’ve probably noticed something strange: the job postings are still there, but it’s just harder to open the doors. Applications go nowhere and you see friends with decent resumes disappear.
You’re not imagining it. I’ve already covered this on the blog when I read Anthropic’s report on the impact of AI on the job market: Junior workers in AI-at-risk occupations are seeing a real, statistically significant decline in entry rates for workers ages 22-25. People aren’t being laid off all that much (although there are layoffs at big tech companies, the unemployment rate hasn’t changed much), they’re just not being hired at all.
