Mining has always been an industry fraught with uncertainty.
Locating ore bodies in geologically complex environments, allocating capital with multi-decade implications, and operating assets in diverse regulatory environments are well-known challenges.
What changes is the context in which these decisions are made.
Discovery rates have declined over time, many ore deposits are deeper and more complex, and expectations for safety, sustainability and capital efficiency continue to rise. At the same time, demand for minerals and metals is expected to increase as the population grows, infrastructure develops and the energy transition advances.
As an industry, we need to continually improve the way we discover, develop and operate assets – and that is a big focus for BHP. This is increasingly supported by how our employees use data, artificial intelligence (AI) and automation in their daily work.
