Researchers hope an artificial intelligence (AI) trial that automatically detects crocodiles could lead to an early warning system in northern Queensland waters.

Developed by the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) and James Cook University (JCU), the prototype uses AI to scan waterway footage streamed live from a camera mounted on a moving trailer.

There will be three week-long proof-of-concept field trials over the next year to test accuracy.

The trials will take place in northern Queensland, but DETSI senior conservation officer Daniel Guymer said the department was still in the process of identifying suitable testing sites.

He said crocodile density was a factor.

“(At some point) we will get a solid number of moves through the array to determine the effectiveness of the technology,” he said.
