DeepSeek’s long-awaited new model fails to reduce US lead in AI

When Chinese company DeepSeek released a competitive new artificial intelligence model last January called R1, said to be built for less than many competitors, some feared that the achievement would pose a threat to America’s leadership in artificial intelligence.

More than a year later, DeepSeek has unveiled preview versions of a long-awaited new flagship model called V4, which costs less to use than many alternatives but doesn’t significantly dent the U.S. lead in AI capabilities. You could almost hear the sighs of relief coming from Washington and Silicon Valley.
