OpenAI’s expansion across US college campuses is starting to resemble an early-stage distribution strategy that could shape long-term adoption trends. According to purchase orders reviewed by Bloomberg, the company has sold more than 700,000 ChatGPT licenses to around 35 public universities, giving students and faculty broad access to the tool. Usage data from 20 campuses shows ChatGPT was called more than 14 million times in September, with average users turning to it 176 times that month for writing, research, and data analysis. While private university data is not publicly disclosed, OpenAI says it has sold well over one million licenses globally to colleges, suggesting overall penetration could be meaningfully higher.
