Broadcom AVGO is sometimes likened to a contemporary version of IBM (IBM) of digital infrastructure, a combination of hardware and enterprise software that runs the cloud. We can say that indeed Broadcom has expanded under the leadership of CEO Hock Tan, both through engineering expertise and aggressive acquisitions.
The company software infrastructure generates tens of billions in revenue. This balance has translated directly into rapid top-line growth. In 2024, Broadcom reported sales of a record $51.6 billion, up 44% from 2023, owing to custom AI accelerators and the buy-out of VMware.
Together, these businesses reinforce one another. This two-way (approximately 60% chips, 40% software) business model provides Broadcom with good cash flows and a wide moat; it is a leading semiconductor company with a stable base of big clients.
