Australian-founded technology company Sharon AI surged on Wall Street overnight after signing a $1.8 billion data center deal.

Sharon AI will install thousands of high-performance AI chips in data centers in Sydney and Melbourne.

Strengthening data centers will advance research, government and enterprise information technology, the company said.

The company, which is listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange in the US, announced the $1.8 billion deal on Wednesday US time.

Shares in Sharon AI rose 21.5 percent, increasing the company’s valuation to US$440 million (AU$657 million).

Founded in Sydney by James Manning, Andrew Leece and Nick Hughes-Jones, Sharon AI with the Nasdaq company code SHAZ does not build data centers, but rather installs and operates equipment in existing centers – making the company a “neocloud” operator.

As part of the agreement, the company will install around 8,200 Nvidia chips at NEXTDC data centers in Melbourne and Sydney, along with 17.8 petabytes (17,000 terabytes) of storage.
