As managing director of Boman Group, a fund manager that invests the money of wealthy Chinese Australians in global artificial intelligence giants such as Anthropic, OpenAI and Databricks, Eric Gao says he is struggling to find Australian AI companies worth backing as the company reaches a milestone of $1 billion in funds under management.

Boman Group is investing across Asia and beyond and is looking to strike its first deals with Chinese companies after a lengthy process that took two years to obtain licenses to operate in China. Gao said the 15-year-old company sees great opportunities to buy into innovative AI companies, robotics and digital assets and is interested in investing in SpaceX’s highly anticipated IPO.
