Anthropic restricts access to AI models due to US “national security” order

Anthropic announced Friday that it has blocked access to two powerful AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, to comply with a U.S. national security order.

Just three days after Fable 5’s release, the company said in a blog post that it had received a government order banning all foreigners, including those working at Anthropic, from accessing Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for national security reasons.

“The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all of our customers to ensure compliance,” it said.

The company said it received the letter at 5:21 p.m. (2121 GMT) on Friday.

Axios reported that the letter came from US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

US trade officials did not immediately respond to an inquiry from AFP.

The company said the letter did not spell out what specifically concerned the government. However, the company understands that the government believes it has become aware of a method to circumvent or “jailbreak” the Fable 5 model, e.g. b.
