AI deepfakes are distorting Australian politics. Pauline Hanson is right in the middle.

If you take a quick look at the image above, you might see Pauline Hanson and British journalist Laura Kuenssberg in an explosive argument on live television.

Look closer and it’s pretty clear that the scene is not a real TV moment, but rather an extremely realistic AI-generated deepfake designed to mimic reality with disturbing precision.

This is just one example of a wave of AI-generated images currently infiltrating Australian politics and flooding social media. The worst? A quick look at the comments section under the image on Facebook shows that far too many people are taking it at face value.

“Go Pauline, if One Nation comes to power the media and major parties will have a lot of questions to answer, it’s been a few years,” one user wrote.

“You go Pauline YES YES YES,” writes one.

“Well done Pauline. Keep going, we’ve got your back all the way,” said another.
