Jurassic World Rebirth and Rogue One director Gareth Edwards has enthusiastically endorsed the use of generative AI in filmmaking, saying: “She’s a fucking genius when it comes to helping you” and “She’ll be better than CGI.”
Speaking at AI on the Lot, an event organized by Amazon in Culver City, California, Edwards said in remarks reported by the Hollywood Reporter: “I can’t think of any reason why as a filmmaker you wouldn’t be interested in this stuff. It’s so clearly a tool that could be on par with the camera. It’s going to be better than CGI.”
Edwards said AI is most useful in the preparatory stages of filmmaking: “It’s just good for iterating and discovering what you want the film to look like, and then once you know what it is, you start making it your film.”
