The government recently published its national youth strategy, which promises better careers advice for young people in England. This is sorely needed: For today’s teenagers, the future of work probably feels more like a moving target than a destination. Barely three years after ChatGPT went mainstream, the job market has already changed beneath the feet of young people.
In the U.S., job postings for positions that do not require a degree have declined 18% since 2022 and 20% for positions that do not require prior experience. Administrative and service jobs – once important entry points for school leavers – have declined by up to 40%.
