Social commerce — or shopping through platforms like TikTok and Instagram — hasn’t been a huge success in the U.S., partly because of consumers and major retailers’ ongoing distrust of tech giants. To ensure AI initiatives don’t face similar resistance, major payment processors like Visa and software startups like New Generation, which help stores develop or collaborate with chatbots, are trying to negotiate technical compromises with retail partners. “We believe that a service provider like us can gain the trust of retailers faster, which is very important,” says Adam Behrens, CEO of New Generation.

Retailers want in on the action as chatbots have become a crucial tool for consumers to research and confirm purchases. Partnerships between AI and e-commerce companies could ensure that chatbots not only present accurate product information but also use fewer computing resources when fulfilling online orders.
