Australians who share AI deepfakes of another person without their consent could be sued or face hefty fines, according to a new proposal tabled in Federal Parliament today.

Independent Senator David Pocock, introducing the bill, said the government had yet to respond to rapid advances in AI and urgent action was needed.

“I’m worried the government has dropped the ball,” Senator Pocock told the ABC.

“At the moment there is very little you can do as an Australian unless a deepfake is sexually explicit.”

He said Australians, for now, lacked “basic safeguards” against their likeness being copied and used for fraud, commercial exploitation, disinformation and a range of other purposes.

“This bill would establish by law that your face, your voice and your likeness belong to you.”

he said.
