Conversations about artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on our lives have intensified over the past twelve months, with attention most recently focused on the controversial Grok tool, a feature of Elon Musk’s X Platform.
Grok, a generative AI tool, was launched some time ago and generated images based on user requests and answered questions. Since then, the tool has been used for even more sinister purposes, creating and altering images without the subject’s consent to create sexually explicit and offensive material. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the main targets of this (mis)use have been women and children, and national governments – including those of the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Indonesia – have intervened to examine and in some cases ban the use and the harm it causes, as well as explore possible further regulations that could be implemented.
