WiseTech has begun informing employees that they will lose their jobs in layoffs that the company says are due to advances in artificial intelligence – although the word “AI” was omitted from an email to employees in China following a lawsuit against another company in the country.
WiseTech employees have waited nearly three months to learn whether they are among the 2,000 employees the logistics software company will have to cut due to advances in AI. The Australian-listed company announced in late February that it would lay off nearly 30% of its 7,000 employees across 40 countries.
A WiseTech spokesman said the trial had begun in South Korea and Mexico and would begin in other countries, including Australia, next week.
In an email to employees sent this week outlining the timeline for the layoff process, the company referred to an “AI transformation” and said: “AI has fundamentally changed the way work is done across many industries and companies.”
