Wikipedia bans AI-generated content in its online encyclopedia

Wikipedia has banned the use of artificial intelligence in generating or rewriting content for its massive online encyclopedia.

In a recent policy change, Wikipedia said that the use of large language models (or LLMs) “often violates core principles” and is not permitted. The English-language version of Wikipedia contains more than 7.1 million articles.

According to 404 Media, the use of AI has been a contentious issue in Wikipedia’s community of volunteer editors, but a vote among the site’s editors supported the ban.

There are two exceptions to the new ban: AI can still be used for translations and minor text editing.

“Editors are permitted to use LLMs to suggest fundamental corrections to their own writing and to incorporate some of these after human review, provided that the LLM does not introduce its own content,” the new policy states.
