Why people turn to AI first for relationship advice—and why they shouldn’t

It’s 1 a.m. The argument is over, but you still think about it again and again. They repeat the tone, the timing and the one sentence that landed wrong. So you open an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot and type: “Am I right or am I overreacting? What should I say about what you said? What did you mean by XYZ?”

Research on attachment, emotion regulation, and online discourse helps explain why the use of AI is becoming increasingly popular. However, the security it provides can entrench a one-sided interpretation far too quickly and ultimately create expectations that are difficult to fulfill in real relationships.

But for many these days, relationship support starts there. The privacy of AI chatbots has become where people turn first, especially given that the alternative – professional help or family and friends – is often either paying, explaining yourself in detail, or risking judgment at the very moment you feel least confident.
