Chatbots have been the face of generative artificial intelligence for three years. Type something to receive a personalized response that turns into a seemingly magical dialogue with a machine. While this conversational interface seems to be the best way to leverage large language models, some companies are starting to abandon chatbots for fear of liability and loss of control.
They found that users can “jailbreak” the technology themselves with guardrails and cause a chatbot to go off topic, sometimes in harmful or unsavory directions. They may leave magic on the table, but these companies may also be developing safer, more targeted products, raising the question of whether chatbots really are the future interface for AI or just a passing fad.
