The 2026 report, drawn from an online sample of more than 2,000 Australian news consumers, shows that the presence of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) in the news ecosystem is increasing, with almost one in ten people (9%) now using AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to access or consume news – a trend that is growing fastest among those under 25 (16 %, an increase of four percentage points compared to 2025).
