Why AI in public health needs focus, funding and a community voice

Artificial intelligence has become a cornerstone of innovation in medical research, diagnostics and treatment development. From computer vision for tumor detection to generative AI to accelerate pharmaceutical discovery, investments in AI for healthcare have skyrocketed among academic institutions, philanthropic organizations, and venture capitalists. But despite this rapid progress, one area remains under-resourced and under-regarded: AI in public health.

Public health focuses on the well-being of the population and the social, environmental and economic conditions that shape it. Housing stability, nutrition, education, transportation, and climate have as great an impact on health outcomes as clinical interventions. During COVID-19, the world has witnessed how critical public health systems are to ensuring medical breakthroughs reach the people who need them.
