When it comes to AI, Australians have a lot in common with the Pope

It’s not often that the Pope, students and Australians agree.

One topic that has brought these unlikely bedfellows all about the same level is artificial intelligence.

Last week, Pope Leo XIV published his first encyclical, a 43,000-word appeal to address the threats posed by AI.

American college students have expressed their concern by booing distinguished commencement speakers who mention the new technology (the exception that proves the rule was Australian comedian Ronny Chieng, who was greeted with cheers at a Harvard ceremony for his message “F*** AI”).

Nor is it just a group of outsiders and pontiff students. Surveys show that most Australians have no particular preference for the new technology.

Australians don’t like AI and distrust it

Australians have the most negative views of AI in the world, according to an EY survey of people from 23 countries.

Almost half of Australians surveyed for the Minderoo Foundation say the risks outweigh the risks.
