Another day, another literary scandal surrounding AI. It has been claimed that the Commonwealth Short Story Prize jury was deceived by an author who used AI in his winning entry. Jamir Nazir’s The Serpent in the Grove, which won the prize for the Caribbean region, was then published alongside other winning entries in the leading literary magazine Granta.
Almost immediately there were accusations that it was AI-generated. Users on Of course, the reliability of such tools cannot be guaranteed.
Sigrid Rausing, editor of Granta, who was not involved in selecting the story, said in a statement that she showed the story to Claude.ai and asked if it was AI-generated. “The answer was long, concluding that it ‘almost certainly was not made without human assistance’.” Again, this may not tell us anything.
