Australia’s data center boom will fail to create jobs or productivity if the country continues to underfund research and development, Australia’s leading scientific body has warned.
As the country struggles to capitalize on economic opportunities from AI investments rivaling the 2012-13 mining boom, 640 of Australia’s top researchers have banded together to fight for more funding as the Albanian government faces criticism for cutting hundreds of CSIRO jobs.
The researchers launched a lobbying campaign by writing to lawmakers to encourage more research spending to stop the country’s regression. Australia spends just 1.69 percent of GDP on science, compared to an average of 2.7 percent in the OECD, a group of the world’s richest nations.
