“We could have asked ChatGPT”: Students object to course taught by AI

Students at the University of Staffordshire said they felt “robbed of knowledge and joy” after it emerged a course they hoped would launch their digital careers was largely taught by AI.

James and Owen were among 41 students who took a coding module in Staffordshire last year, hoping to change careers and become cybersecurity experts or software developers through a government-funded training program.

But after a series of AI-generated slides were intermittently read out by an AI narration, James said he lost faith in the program and the people running it because he feared he had wasted “two years” of his life on a course that was delivered “in the cheapest possible way.”

“If we turned in stuff that was generated by AI, we would be kicked out of college, but we are being taught by an AI,” James said during a confrontation with his instructor recorded as part of the course in October 2024.
