Volvo Cars is taking its autonomous driving partnership with Nvidia to the next level. The two companies said on November 4 that they will jointly develop AI-based driving safety technology for next-generation models and progressively expand autonomous driving functions to the point where drivers no longer need to keep their eyes on the road.

At the heart of the collaboration is combining Nvidia’s accelerated computing and AI capabilities with Volvo’s vehicle safety design. The scope extends beyond highways. The goal is technology that can drive itself from origin to destination on complex real-world roads, including traffic-heavy urban areas and parking spaces.

Volvo will adopt Nvidia’s sensor and computing architecture “Hyperion,” its vehicle operating system “Halos OS,” and its driving software “Alpamayo Stack” in next-generation vehicles. The structure integrates the vehicle safety system with computing and driving software to improve the precision of environmental perception and the speed of decision-making. Volvo’s roughly 100 years of crash-safety research and engineering data will also feed into the development process.

The most notable element is the phased autonomous driving roadmap. The two companies plan to sequentially apply “eyes-off” technology, which does not require the driver to keep watching the road, and eventually “mind-off” technology, which requires no constant attention to driving conditions. This goes beyond assisting with steering and…
