VMware introduces a versatile new architecture for VMware Cloud on AWS to streamline cloud migration and cater to cutting-edge AI/ML projects – VMware Updates and Insights

VMware has introduced a new architecture for VMware Cloud on AWS at the AWS re:Invent 2023 conference in Las Vegas. The new architecture features an Amazon EC2 M7i bare metal instance with custom 4th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, providing customers with a diskless option to optimize application and infrastructure requirements. This new architecture aims to accelerate cloud migrations, enhance recovery from disasters and ransomware attacks, and support modern AI/ML workloads while lowering the total cost of ownership for users.

The VMware Cloud on AWS service combines VMware Cloud Foundation with Amazon EC2’s elastic bare-metal infrastructure to allow customers to run mission-critical applications in private, public, and hybrid cloud environments with optimized access to AWS services. This joint managed service offers the same architecture and operational experience on-premises and in the cloud, enabling IT teams to quickly extend, migrate, protect, and modernize vSphere-based applications on AWS using familiar VMware tools. The service is provided and supported by VMware, AWS, and their partner networks.

With the addition of the Amazon EC2 M7i instance and flexible storage options such as Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP and VMware Cloud Flex Storage, customers can easily move to the cloud and modernize enterprise applications faster. The M7i instance, powered by custom 4th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, provides strong performance and scalability for various workloads from application servers to CPU-based machine learning and video streaming. Intel Xeon processors with Intel Advanced Matrix Extensions (Intel AMX) deliver enhanced performance improvements for AI workloads.

Partners like Presidio are offering cloud consulting services and managed services for VMware Cloud on AWS to help customers navigate the complexities of cloud migrations and leverage the latest technology innovations. The new architecture and instance type aim to reduce barriers to moving workloads to the cloud quickly and efficiently.

The Amazon EC2 M7i instances are expected to be available for VMware Cloud on AWS in the first quarter of fiscal 2024. VMware continues to innovate, bringing together technologies from VMware, AWS, Intel, and NetApp to meet the evolving needs of customers in the digital era.
