A report into the effectiveness of Victoria’s distracted driver and seatbelt detection program using artificial intelligence (AI) cameras failed to determine whether it improves road safety.
It also found poor record-keeping and inaccurate data collection, a lack of evidence to determine the location of cameras, and privacy violations in the storage of images and information about violations.
The Victorian Auditor-General’s Office (VAGO) report examined whether the distracted driver and seatbelt detection camera program introduced in 2023 is meeting its objectives.
This included raising awareness of the risks and laws surrounding distracted driving and failure to wear a seatbelt, strengthening enforcement and reducing behaviors that can increase the risk of traffic accidents, serious injuries and deaths.
