Italian luxury fashion house Valentino is under fire after publishing “disturbing” ads online for one of its luxury handbags created using artificial intelligence (AI).
The brand announced a collaboration with digital artists in what it called a “digital creative project” to promote its new DeVain handbag.
But an AI-generated ad posted on Instagram was met with heavy criticism from fans, who called the visuals – and use of AI – “sloppy” and “sad”.
The BBC has contacted Valentino for comment.
The Instagram post promoting the handbag, whose label says it was made using AI, shows a “surreal” collage of models sandwiched between Valentino logos and its DeVain bag.
At one point, models can be seen seemingly emerging from an embellished gold version of the handbag. Other times, the brand’s logo morphs into people’s arms before they transform into a merging vortex of bodies.
