Usher’s nonprofit organization, Usher’s New Look, is dedicated to making technology career paths more accessible for underserved youth. Recently, the organization partnered with IBM’s SkillsBuild program to offer free technological training, including AI, to the youth it serves. This collaboration aims to prepare young people for the increasing presence of AI in various industries.
Careshia Moore, CEO and president of Usher’s New Look, highlighted the importance of providing access to training programs like SkillsBuild, stating that over 1,500 youth benefit from their services each year. IBM’s Vice President and Chief Impact Officer, Justina Nixon-Saintil, emphasized the significance of partnerships like the one with Usher’s New Look in providing free training and job opportunities for young people to enhance their social and economic mobility.
Moore noted that IBM’s involvement aligns with Usher’s New Look’s mission of supporting the next generation, incorporating Usher’s vision of infusing joy into the problem-solving process to address opportunity gaps and inequities. Since its founding in 1999, Usher’s New Look has impacted over 50,000 young people by offering programs in education, financial literacy, professional development, wellness, and mental health.
In addition to technology training, the nonprofit received a $500,000 grant from the Truist Foundation in 2021 for its financial education initiatives. Usher’s New Look continues to strive towards empowering young people with the skills and resources they need to succeed in their future endeavors.
