A US federal judge on Thursday lifted sanctions imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration on Anthropic, saying the measures likely violated the law because the AI powerhouse was blacklisted for expressing discomfort with the Pentagon’s use of its technology.
In the Northern District of California, Judge Rita Lin granted Anthropic’s request for a preliminary injunction in its lawsuit against the government, freezing a presidential order banning all federal agencies from using Anthropic’s technology.
The ruling also overturns the Pentagon’s designation of Anthropic, the creator of the Claude AI model, as a national security supply chain risk – a designation usually reserved for organizations from unfriendly countries.
The designation not only blocks the Pentagon’s use of the company’s technology, but also requires all defense suppliers and contractors to certify that they are not using Anthropic’s models in their work with the department.
