Most cautionary tales about artificial intelligence focus on how disruptive and destructive the technology can be when it falls into the wrong hands—and for good reason. My personal dystopian vision of an AI takeover is not in the form of a hostile regime, but rather in the form of a series of everyday inconveniences that are slowly ruining my life. The mental image of a shopping cart collector at Target going crazy and swinging a long, winding line of red baskets into my car is my worst nightmare, because who wants to spend time on the phone arguing with insurance salesmen about something so stupid?
