Unions warn of mass layoffs, short-term savings through AI

The introduction of artificial intelligence threatens to trigger mass layoffs if workers are not retrained and given a safe job, a major union has warned the New South Wales government in a bid to enforce worker protections at the state level.

As federal and state Labor governments openly discuss the need to share the benefits of AI with their own workers, Public Service Association deputy secretary Troy Wright said more safeguards were needed to prevent bureaucracies from driving “massive short-term savings and long-term failures”.
