Trump signs executive order providing early access to new versions of AI

Donald Trump signed an executive order creating a voluntary framework for the federal government to test powerful new AI models before their release. Tuesday’s highly anticipated order represents an attempt by the president to tighten his grip on cybersecurity and national security threats from AI, countering his previous deregulatory stance.

Under the new rules, tech companies would be required to make their AI models available for voluntary review by the government up to 30 days before a public release. The Trump administration says this will allow it to improve national security, particularly when it comes to cybersecurity.

The executive order anticipates imposing mandatory verification requirements on technology companies that develop AI models, a rumored feature of previous versions of the executive order. Some of Trump’s tougher MAGA supporters had pushed him for a tougher process, while tech industry supporters argued for loosening the reins.
