Much of the discussion about how to work effectively with generative AI has focused on prompt engineering, or more recently context engineering: the semi-technical ability to shape input so that large language models produce useful output. These skills are helpful, but they are only part of the story. The real gain comes when employees learn to use generative AI in their daily work in a way that improves the way they work. This requires defining valuable problems within workflows, evaluating possible solutions, experimenting quickly, and sustainably integrating new practices into daily work – disciplines that are central to the work of product managers.
