There was art about artificial intelligence decades before it became a reality. I knew everything about HAL 9000, the sentient supercomputer of 2001: A Space Odysseyand Skynet becomes self-aware The Terminator Years before I ever heard the term “AI.” And I was taught to fear them.
This dystopian trope is still going strong today. Tom Cruise runs for his life against The Entity Mission: Impossibleand every time an android is introduced in the film, moviegoers can start counting down the seconds until the carnage begins. But none of this actually calls into question the way AI materially impacts us today.
