This expert advised on binding AI guardrails. The government’s national plan does not include them

The government has unveiled its National AI Plan, setting out a roadmap for expanding Australia’s AI infrastructure and deployment, which Industry and Innovation Minister Tim Ayres says will help create “a fairer, stronger Australia where everyone benefits from this technological change”.

However, the plan did not include the mandatory guardrails that many expected would serve as proactive regulations for tech companies.

Professor Kimberlee Weatherall, co-director of the Center for AI, Trust and Governance at the University of Sydney, joins the podcast to explain the government’s AI strategy, what’s missing from the plan and how Australia compares to other countries when it comes to AI policymaking.
