I think a lot of people have a pretty simple relationship with Microsoft Office: they don’t need a whole software lifestyle, they just need Word, Excel, and the rest of the usual suspects to be there when it is time to work. That’s why Microsoft Office 2021 Professional for $32.97 (reg. $219.99) makes sense on its face. It’s a one-time purchase for one Windows PC, which means no subscription, no monthly charge, and no extra decision-making every time Microsoft wants to nudge people toward 365.

This version includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, OneNote, Publisher, and Access, so it covers more than the average person probably needs, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If someone works with databases, wants desktop Outlook, or still relies on Publisher for certain projects, the fuller version is usually the one worth watching.

I also think there’s something appealing about software that just stays in its lane. Office 2021 is not pretending to be a whole…
