It’s only May and the tech industry has already handed out pink slips to more than 92,000 people. Job cuts have been relentless at 98 companies — and April was the worst month for announced tech job cuts in at least two years, with 45,800 employees affected. Meta, Snap, Microsoft, Oracle, Block, Amazon, Nike and GoPro all moved within weeks, creating the kind of mass layoffs the industry hasn’t seen since the post-pandemic calculation for 2022 and 2023.The reason given is AI almost everywhere. Companies spend horrendous amounts on data centers and chips and have to find the money somewhere. It turns out that workers are the somewhere. The message to investors is clear: we are getting lean so we can get smart. Whether it actually works – or whether AI is just a convenient excuse to do what crowded tech giants would end up doing anyway – is a much harder question…
