In a blog post published Friday, the company behind the Claude chatbot said government authorities had ordered it to ban all foreigners from accessing the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models, citing national security concerns.

Anthropic said it received the order at 5:21 p.m. (21:21 GMT) on Friday and that the letter did not explain in detail the government’s specific security concerns.

The ban also affects foreign nationals currently in the United States, including those who work at Anthropic.

Due to the order, the company had to block access for everyone at short notice, it said.
